<image:title>Stories - Barton Line - Robert Barton: DNA and Relationships - DNA From Which Parent?</image:title>
<image:caption>Because autosomal DNA tests look at the chromosomes we inherit from both our parents, and we get half of our DNA from one parent and half from the other, companies can tell likely relationships between testers based on how much DNA is shared on which chromosomes, and they can tell which DNA likely came from which parent even if those parents didn’t take DNA tests. In this ethnicity graph, you can see Robert Barton’s DNA results and what he likely got from each parent—a lot of England/Northwestern Europe from both parents, more Germanic Europe and Sweden/Denmark from his father, and all of his Ireland from his mother. <image:title>Stories - Boyer Line - The Boyer Store - Barto’s Store & Hotel</image:title>
<image:caption>The last postmaster before the Mt. Zion post office was discontinued in 1915 was Warren R. Barto, and it appears that he did run a store, hotel, and the post office out of the same location. The photo is a post card of the Barto’s Store and Hotel in Mt. Zion, Pa from the early 1900s. The building on the right looks to have been part of the hotel at this time, though by the 1950s it was unused and being referred to as the “chicken house”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Boyer Line - The Boyer Store - Selling the Store</image:title>
<image:caption>Harry and Pauline sold the store on June 1, 1973 according to the county courthouse. Bruce and Lynn “think that Mama and Papa had purchased their new house in Sunset (near Lebanon) before that date and that they actually could have moved out of the store before that date with possibly some sort of short-term rental agreement with the new owners. But we don’t know. But at least the date is pretty close.” A couple of weeks before the sale date, they held an auction to sell household goods and antiques. Lynn and Bruce “both remember an auction at the store to sell off a lot of old stuff (the store inventory transferred to the new owner who kept the store open for a number of years).” The Lebanon Daily News advertised the auction on May 11 and 15, listing quite a long catalog of things being sold. Ray Deck (Pauline’s uncle) and Curtis Swope were listed as Clerks, with refreshments provided by the “Willing Workers of Zoars Church”. Items for sale included: “Piano & Stool, Organ Stool, 2 pc, Living Room suite, Goose neck Rocker, 4 White metal Tables, TV set, Antique Rockers, Oak Round Table, 2 rugs & mats, Studio Couch, Sewing Machine, Elect. stove, metal cabinet, end tables, Elect. heater, Elct. Fan, mattress, Bed spring, metal bed, very fine shelf clock, Rocking chairs, stuffed chairs, magazine rack, typewriter, laundry cart, large Coffee grinder, commode, wooden counter drawers, wooden shell boxes, nail kegs, oil lights, dye cabinet, 4 spool cabinets, kitchen chairs, cane seat chairs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Boyer Line - The Boyer Store - Store and Related Buildings</image:title>
<image:caption>On June 2, 1947, as a young couple with a 7-month old baby, Harry and Pauline Boyer (shown here with the store in the background) bought the store from Wilson and Sallie. The middle door you see on the photo goes into the kitchen. The door on the right goes to the upstairs apartment (kitchen, living room, bedroom—and shared upstairs bath!). The gas pumps would have been on the left side of the photo, where the car is parked (though they are gone by the time this photo was taken). There was also a tall “Atlantic” gas sign—the company which ultimately became ARCO.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Boyer Line - The Boyer Store - Inside the Store</image:title>
<image:caption>Bruce Boyer describes what is seen in this photo. “The checkout counter is on the right on top of an ice cream freezer. Next on the right after a rack of candies from Reading, PA, is an old-fashioned upright soda cooler [a small 6 oz. Coke was six cents!]. After the soda cooler on the right was the bread and bakery shelves; bread was 25 or 26 cents a loaf depending on the type. And all the way in the back of the store (barely visible) is the meat, cheese, eggs, and vegetable cooler. (We sliced local cheeses, lunch meats and bolognas, as per customer request.) It looks like there are lots of six-packs of sodas on the floor along the left side of the aisle (all soda bottles were returnable). Neither Lynn nor I remember the store being quite so crowded!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Boyer Line - The Boyer Store - Pauline Boyer</image:title>
<image:caption>A 1948 article in the Altoona Tribune, called “This Morning’s Comment” gushes about the wonders of Mt Zion and how amazing it is. It also highlights Pauline Boyer and the store towards the end. “At the old Mt. Zion inn, the visitors were shown about by beautiful-to-look-at Mrs. Pauline Boyer, who might have stepped out of a Paul Helleu etching, and as gracious as she is good looking, of a high-bred type. The Boyer store is typical of the good old days, carries a line of about everything, clean, and cheerful, is a social center and institution of Mt. Zion.” (Shoemaker, 1948)</image:caption>

<image:title>What do you know about...? - What should I work on? - Since goals are nothing without a plan to reach them, I have a few ideas:</image:title>
<image:caption>Try the 15-minutes per day approach to genealogy. Best practice for research is to have a clear question and make a plan for how to answer it. Each week, I will set a target question, and identify discrete research approaches and 15 minute tasks that can be tackled daily. Accept posts that are less completely researched. I have not felt comfortable posting unless a story is extremely researched and cited. While I will still aim to ensure that what I share is documented so that my findings can be checked, duplicated, or built on, I will keep many posts shorter and/or note when information is missing or sources have not been checked, so as not to prevent me from posting. Set aside time. Set a standard day and time each week that I will work on and complete my weekly post for the website. Connect with family. At least once per month, I will talk to a family member who has an interest in our genealogy to inspire and motivate me, and to hopefully build the number of contributors to the page. <image:title>Suess Line - Hans Christian Anderson Connection? - Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) Facts</image:title>
<image:caption>Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark on 2 April 1805. His father died in 1816 and his mother remarried in 1818. He moved to Copenhagen at age 14 (about 1819). Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, he is best remembered for his fairy tales including "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Little Mermaid,” "The Princess and the Pea," "The Ugly Duckling," and "Thumbelina." <image:caption>Beverly (Suess) Barton’s mother’s maiden name was Frankie Marie Carstens. Her father was Henry Frank Carstens (1869-1941) and his father was Ulrich Anton Carstens (1839-after 1907). Anton was born in Oldenburg, Germany (1880 census) or Prussia (1870 census). The photo on the right shows Anton Carsten’s family in about 1895. Anton and his wife are in the front row, with their youngest son between. Their three older sons and their families are in the back row. Henry Frank is at the left, holding his son (Frankie Marie’s older brother Nelson) next to his wife Clara Delilah.</image:caption>

<image:title>Suess Line - Hans Christian Anderson Connection? - Did HCA have a tutor named Carstens?</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes. HCA attended a Jewish boy’s school headed by a Fedder Carstens when he was young. Herr is the German title for a male teacher, so he likely would have been called “Herr Carstens”. Below are a few relevant excerpts from books. HCA first attended a school in Odense starting at about age 5 and then changed to a school for Jewish boys where Fedder Carstens was the headmaster, and that Mr. Carstens took extraordinary care of Hans Christian during his years at his school. The Jewish school closed in 1811 and Andersen was then sent to the Charity School. (Johnson, 1999) [Hans] “asked [his mother] to send him to another school, which she accordingly did. This other school was a boy’s school kept by a Herr Carstens,”. (Bain 189, page 13) “For the rest Andersen, by his own confession, idled or rather dreamed away most of his time at Herr Carstens’ school, to the frequent disgust of that pedagogue, whom he tried, not always successfully, to propitiate with bouquets of wild flowers.” (Bain 189, page 14)</image:caption>

<image:title>Johnson Line - Dad in the War - Dad (Charles J. Johnson) was the greatest Aussie patriot you could ever meet. As soon as war was declared in 1914 he wanted to enlist but of course he was only 15 years old at the time. Eventually, he lied about his age, saying he was 19 years, (Hard to believe if you look at the baby face in the photograph). His Mum signed his papers on the 23 of September and he was in. His army number is very low, 621, so he was amongst the earliest to enlist. You may wonder why his Mum signed his papers but I think she knew he would go anyhow, even if it was under a false name. If he did that, she would not be able to get news of him and he wouldn’t be able to allot some of his pay to her. His age on his Army papers will always be incorrect. On his enlistment papers he was listed as a shop assistant. At this time his mother’s address was 115 George St Fitzroy, (I taught at the George St. School in the 60s) changing soon to 34 Albert St, East Melbourne. He trained at Broadmeadows Army Camp and he was appointed to the 1st Field Ambulance. His unit was shipped overseas and landed at Gallipoli on 25th of April 1915, by which time he was 16 years of age.</image:title>

<image:title>Johnson Line - Dad in the War - Charles J. Johnson’s discharge papers list him as 5ft 5ins tall and weighing 9 stone. This was 1 inch taller than his enlistment height. A miracle considering what he had been through.</image:title>

<image:title>Johnson Line - Dad in the War - When he was able to be moved, he was taken by Hospital ship to Malta (see photo of him in the hospital in Malta on the left) and later on the hospital ship “Delta” to England and to Saint George’s Hospital Stamford SE (London), England. He was 16 years old. Apart from the obvious injuries, the growth centre on one of his legs was affected adversely and one leg was always about one and a half inches shorter than the other and the right knee was never able to lock in the usual way. He had to throw this leg forward with the thigh muscles as though it was a wooden leg and he always had a bit of a limp. When he had a new pair of trousers (not often) he would have to lay them out on the ironing board (which he had made for Mum) and measure and iron up the short leg, cut off the excess, and hand stitch it into place.</image:title>
